What is Anxiety?

Anxiety is a natural stress response, but for some, it becomes overwhelming and disruptive to daily life. As a psychotherapist specialising in anxiety disorders, I understand that no two individuals experience anxiety in the same way. That’s why I use different therapeutic approaches depending on the specific challenges you’re facing. My practice incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT), and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), all of which are grounded in the same scientific principles of cognitive psychology and behaviourism.

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT is one of the most widely used and researched methods for treating anxiety disorders. This approach focuses on identifying and challenging unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours that contribute to anxiety. By learning to recognize and change distorted thinking, you can develop healthier ways of responding to anxiety triggers. CBT provides practical tools for managing anxiety in everyday situations, helping you regain control and build long-term resilience.

Rational Emotive Behaviour Therapy (REBT)

REBT, developed by Albert Ellis, is another powerful form of cognitive-behavioral therapy. While similar to CBT, REBT specifically emphasizes the role of irrational beliefs in creating emotional distress. In this approach, we work together to identify those deeply held, often unconscious, beliefs that lead to anxiety. By disputing and reframing these beliefs, you can reduce their influence over your emotions and behaviours, leading to a more balanced and grounded perspective on life’s challenges.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT offers a slightly different take on anxiety treatment. Instead of trying to eliminate anxiety, ACT encourages you to accept uncomfortable thoughts and feelings as a natural part of life. Through mindfulness and behaviour change strategies, ACT helps you stay present in the moment and commit to actions that align with your values, even when anxiety is present. This approach teaches you how to live a full and meaningful life, despite the challenges that anxiety may bring.

A Unified Foundation

Though each of these therapies takes a unique approach, they all stem from the same scientific foundation: the understanding that our thoughts, beliefs, and behaviours are interconnected. Through cognitive psychology and behaviourism, we can reshape the way we think and act, leading to significant improvements in anxiety symptoms. In my practice, I tailor these approaches to meet your specific needs, ensuring that the treatment is as effective and personalised as possible.

If anxiety is affecting your daily life, know that there are proven methods to help you regain control. Together, we can explore the best approach to support you in overcoming anxiety and moving towards a more balanced and fulfilling life.
