Couples Counselling in Crouch End

Every relationship experiences difficult periods. Over time, couples can find themselves having the same arguments repeatedly, feeling misunderstood, becoming increasingly distant, or struggling to reconnect after a period of stress, conflict, or hurt.

Often, neither person is entirely sure how things became so difficult. Conversations that begin with good intentions can quickly turn into criticism, defensiveness, withdrawal or silence. The more each partner tries to solve the problem, the more stuck the relationship can become.

Couples counselling provides a space to slow these patterns down and understand what is happening beneath them.

Why Do Couples Get Stuck?

Many couples come to counselling believing that the problem is communication. While communication is important, it is often only part of the picture.

Beneath recurring disagreements there are usually deeper differences in personality, emotional needs, expectations, coping styles or ways of responding to stress. One partner may seek closeness and reassurance while the other needs time and space. One may want to discuss problems immediately while the other withdraws when feeling overwhelmed.

Over time, these differences can create a cycle where both partners feel frustrated, unheard or alone. The arguments may change, but the pattern remains the same.

A central aim of couples counselling is to help couples recognise these patterns and develop a different way of responding to one another.

Common Issues I Help With:

Couples seek counselling for many different reasons, including:

  • Frequent arguments and conflict
  • Emotional distance or disconnection
  • Difficulties with communication
  • Trust issues
  • Recovery after an affair or betrayal
  • Parenting disagreements
  • Differences in intimacy or sexual connection
  • Life transitions and major changes
  • Resentment that has built up over time
  • Anxiety, stress or mental health difficulties affecting the relationship

Some couples arrive feeling close to separation. Others simply want to strengthen their relationship before problems become more serious.

My Approach:

I believe that lasting change rarely comes from deciding which partner is right and which partner is wrong.

Instead, we work together to understand the interactional patterns that keep both people stuck. As these patterns become clearer, couples often develop greater empathy for one another and a deeper understanding of the vulnerabilities, fears and needs that may be hidden beneath conflict.

Counselling can help partners understand the patterns that emerge during difficult conversations, reduce unhelpful cycles of criticism and withdrawal, and create a stronger sense of emotional connection.

The goal is not to eliminate every difference between two people. Healthy relationships can accommodate differences. The aim is to help couples respond to those differences in ways that bring them closer together rather than push them further apart.

What Sessions Are Like

Couples counselling provides a structured and balanced space where both partners can feel heard.

My role is not to take sides or decide who is correct. Instead, I help both partners understand what is happening within the relationship and support them in developing more productive ways of responding to one another.

Sessions focus not only on current disagreements, but also on the underlying patterns that repeatedly give rise to them. Many couples tell me that simply understanding these patterns more clearly helps them feel less stuck and more hopeful about the future.
